A windshield replacement or collision repair can involve more than the parts you can see. If your vehicle has driver-assistance features, the repair may also require checks of its cameras or radar sensors. The right next step depends on your vehicle and the work performed.
What does ADAS calibration do?
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS, use inputs such as cameras and radar to support functions including lane assistance and collision warnings. Calibration establishes the alignment or reference settings specified by the manufacturer. It is a separate task from simply clearing a fault code.
Which repairs should prompt a conversation?
Tell your repairer about windshield replacement, collision damage, camera or radar removal, and suspension or alignment work. These are useful details when checking whether the manufacturer calls for calibration on your particular vehicle. They do not mean every vehicle needs the same procedure after every repair.
I-CAR’s guidance on calibration after windshield replacement highlights the need to check OEM requirements. Ask your service provider to consult the current procedures for your vehicle’s year, make, model and equipment.
Static or dynamic calibration?
Some procedures use positioned targets and specified workshop conditions. Others involve driving under prescribed conditions. A vehicle may require one method or a combination. The manufacturer’s procedure determines what is appropriate; convenience alone should not determine the method.
What information should you provide?
- Your vehicle’s year, make and model.
- The repairs completed and whether a camera or radar component was disturbed.
- Any dashboard warnings or changes you have noticed.
- Your location and whether you prefer mobile or in-shop service.
Keep repair paperwork handy. It helps explain what changed and gives the technician a better starting point. If a warning appears or a feature behaves unexpectedly, arrange an assessment and follow the vehicle handbook’s instructions.
Ask what the service includes
Before booking, ask which procedure applies, what preparation is needed, and what scan or calibration records will be supplied. A clear explanation of the scope helps you understand the work and keep useful records alongside your repair invoice.
